Brazil's Oil Boom Requires Skilled Professionals
Brazil's budding oil industry continues to garner global attention as the country discovers and develops large amounts of oil in the offshore pre-salt blocks. There's an estimated 14 billion barrels of proven reserves that lie off the coasts of Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). In addition to having a lot of oil, the country holds high-quality light sweet crude oil – a commodity that is in high demand.

ExxonMobil to Boost Output at Iraq West Qurna-1 by Mid 2013
U.S. energy giant Exxon Mobil Corp. and its partners are planning to increase crude oil production from West Qurna-1 oil field in southern Iraq to 530,000 barrels a day by July, from 495,000 barrels a day now, a senior Iraqi oil official said Monday.

Monterey Shale Reserve Holds Economic Potential for Region
Some big news out of California this week – oil companies have begun drilling exploratory wells in hopes of tapping the Monterey Shale reserve. Taft California, a town in the middle of it all, was originally founded on the petroleum business. If drilling of the Monterey Shale reserve were to commence, there’s a strong indication it would reignite the region’s profitability.

The chance of a new industry emerging to pump CO2 from power plants into depleted North Sea oil and gas wells inched a little closer last month when the UK government picked two project ideas to take forward in its £1-billion funding contest designed to commercialise the technique.

The Underwater Centre awarded funding
The Underwater Centre, Fort William, has been awarded funding to train candidates for the commercial diving industry within Scotland.  The funding is part of the Energy Skills Challenge Fund and has been awarded by Skills Development Scotland.  It is a move towards making sure that trainees, with the right practical attributes to become commercial divers, have a chance to undertake the training – applicants will only be awarded funding after passing a more rigorous assessment procedure.
